Excursion

Excursion and Immersion Services

The Language Place in collaboration with our partners in France, Germany, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Republic of Benin and Republic of Togo, organizes language excursion programme for Secondary School Students in Nigeria. The foreign languages (French and German) are extreme strategic relevance to Nigeria and the Nigerians. For one, Nigeria is surrounded on all sides by French speaking countries. This together with the fact that French is the second most widely spoken language in the world after English (A.V. Jibowo 2005) means policy makers, business intrests and governments especially in Nigeria stand at immense competitive peril without sufficient mastery of French or German.

Foreign Languages (French and German) are languages of international interacrion in every field of human endeavour: Science and technology, Sports, Politics, Business, etc. This is of even more significance to our secondary school students who, doubtless, will be leaders of tomorrow. The centrality of the two languages in the EU States is also a fact to reckon with. As our world shrinks into a global village and information, trade and people traverse borders at speed hitherto unimaginable, trans-national and international communication has become not just another exercise explored at convenience, but a requisite for survival. In this Information Communication Technology driven age, it is as they say; “Communicate or die.”

The Objectives of this Language Excursion are:

  1. to boost the interest of secondary school students in studying French or German language in higher institution later in life;
  2. to widen the horizon of youths by giving them opportunity to access French or German culture;
  3. to improve the proficiency of students in French and German language and help participants acquire mastery of both the spoken and the written aspects of any of these languages;to enhance the verbal communication skills of students;
  4. to procure the Foreign Country Experience (FCE) needed for the development and boosting of self-cconfidence;
  5. to give students an unforgettable experience that will surely have a life-long impact on them,
  6. to give students opportunity that is very necessary in our globalized world;
  7. to expand the world view of students;
  8. to increase students’ opportunities for meaningful leisure activities such as travelling, viewing foreign language films, watching foreign TV programmes, playing football the French/German way;
  9. to increase the sense of self-worth of students. Speaking French or German to your foreign friends on Facebook, Twitter or ordering food in French or German will do wonders for their ego!

The 2-week language excursion comes up twice a year: November/December and August/September.

The cost of the two-week travel includes:

  1. French or German Language Course;
  2. Insurance
  3. Accommodation

All participants from each school should decide for the same excursion destination. However, a school that fulfills the minimum participant’s requirement can choose more than one excursion destinations.

The decision to participate in the excursion should be communicated early enough to Language Place to facilitate our planning and passage. Three to four months’ notice before the trip is highly recommended.

All secondary school students (JSS 1 – SSS 3) are eligible for this trio. The study trip is actually not limited to French or German students alone. Participants are to get their travelling documents ready two months before the scheduled day of departure (International Passport for trips outside Nigeria or School ID Card for trips within the country).
